Woods Fuller Law Firm Recognized as Humane Hero

Growing up as an only child and severely allergic to anything with fur, Woods Fuller Shareholder Jennifer Wosje never had a chance to own a pet. However, in her early 30s, her desire to fill that void led her to get treatment so she could finally have dogs.

“My personal journey with overcoming allergies to have pets has profoundly influenced my commitment to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society,” she says. In 2008 Jennifer was asked if she would join the Board of the Humane Society and she has been serving ever since. “Every day the passionate care the staff provides to the animals motivates me and enriches my life, compelling me to give back and help others experience the joy pets bring,” she adds.

It's a passion and motivation that is shared across Woods Fuller. Walk down the hallways on any given day and you will likely find a dog in someone’s office. In 2023 the firm entered a 3-year partnership with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society (SFAHS), becoming the organization’s first Corporate Humane Hero. “Woods Fuller has been a part of the community for 135 years and we are proud of the fact that we contribute to and support a lot of different organizations and charities,” says Managing Partner and Shareholder David Kroon. He adds, “We feel the Humane Society is a perfect fit for what we believe in.”

2023 was a record-breaking year for SFAHS. The organization finished off the year with 3,807 adoptions which is about 30 more adoptions than the previous record set back in 2013 and about 1,000 more adoptions than in 2022. This year they have a goal of 4,000 adoptions. On top of that 319 animals were microchipped through the organization, and the average length of stay was about one a half day less at the shelter than the previous year. But the need continues to be great. 2023 also brought a 36% increase in the number of animals housed at the shelter. 8,230 animals were in SFAHS’s care and half of those animals were strays.

“I have a rescue dog which I’ve had for ten years,” explains David. “I’m a firm believer that rescue dogs are always more grateful. It’s been the best dog I’ve ever had. We are grateful for the work of the Humane Society in our community, and we are happy to support that mission.

As a bonus, the SFAHS brings adoptable animals to the firm on a monthly basis. It helps the animals socialize and brings joy to Woods Fuller staff. One attorney who always makes sure to pop in and say hi? Jennifer. “Working with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society motivates me daily. It’s been amazing for me. It’s very fulfilling.”
